**Raising Awareness for Pulmonary Fibrosis**We would like to acknowledge the recent passing of actress Diane Ladd, who lost her battle with a rare lung disease. Her daughter, Academy Award-winning actor Laura Dern, has been carrying on her mother's mission to spread awareness about pulmonary fibrosis.
Diane Ladd was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in 2018 and passed away at the age of 89 in November 2025. During her seven-year journey with the disease, she and Laura Dern advocated for lung health and worked together to raise awareness about IPF.
Laura Dern described her mother's diagnosis as heartbreaking, but they were able to extend her life expectancy through medication, oxygen therapy, and pulmonary rehab. The two of them worked together to support Ladd's lungs and improve her quality of life.
This experience inspired the mother-daughter duo to co-write their memoir "Honey, Baby, Mine," which chronicles Ladd's journey with IPF. They also launched an awareness campaign through Beyond the Scars, a program that empowers others to recognize the signs of pulmonary fibrosis and encourages early screening and management planning.
Recognizing Early Signs of Pulmonary Fibrosis
Pulmonary fibrosis is a progressive lung disease characterized by scarring, which can lead to permanent damage and reduced quality of life. Early detection is crucial in preventing or delaying the symptoms associated with pulmonary fibrosis, such as coughing and shortness of breath.
According to Dr. John Odackal, a pulmonary and critical care specialist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, early treatment can help prevent or delay these life-changing symptoms. Dr. Jeffrey Horowitz, director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Interstitial Lung Disease Program, added that while medications can reduce the progression of disease, they cannot reverse or cure it.
Horowitz emphasized the importance of ongoing research in IPF and other forms of progressive pulmonary fibrosis. For those who meet certain criteria, supplemental oxygen and pulmonary rehabilitation programs can help improve endurance and quality of life.
At our clinic, we are committed to raising awareness about pulmonary fibrosis and providing support to those affected by this disease. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with IPF, please don't hesitate to reach out to us for guidance and resources.
