Research has shown that GLP-1 medications containing tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) can significantly reduce cardiovascular risks for individuals with serious heart conditions. These findings are based on two studies presented at the SCAI 2026 Scientific Sessions & CAIC-ACCI Summit in Montreal.
The results of these studies indicate that GLP-1 drugs containing tirzepatide may lower heart-related risks for people undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and those with obesity undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The researchers found that participants who used tirzepatide medications experienced lower rates of major adverse cardiovascular events, such as:
- acute myocardial infarction
- heart failure
- ventricular arrhythmias
The studies also showed a significant reduction in the risk of death among participants receiving tirzepatide who underwent a PCI procedure, with a 62% lower risk compared to those not receiving the medication.
Experts agree that these findings support earlier research on the cardiovascular benefits of weight loss drugs and emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including daily exercise and a balanced diet, in conjunction with GLP-1 medications.
