In March 2023, Guerdy was scheduled to undergo breast augmentation surgery. However, a mammogram revealed that she had stage 1B estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer in her left breast. This type of cancer feeds on estrogen to grow.
Diagnosed at an early stage, Guerdy underwent surgery to remove the cancerous tumor and subsequent chemotherapy treatment. She also chose to have tissue from the tumor tested with the Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score to determine the likelihood that the cancer would return and whether chemotherapy was necessary.
The results of the test helped her and her doctor make informed decisions about her treatment plan, which included 12 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. According to Dr. Doreen Agnese, a surgical oncologist at The Ohio State University, radiation therapy is typically given to the remaining breast tissue after lumpectomy, as well as to lymph nodes that are not removed in the armpit, above the collarbone, and along the breastbone.
Guerdy's journey was not without its challenges. She faced tough days during treatment, but with the support of her family, she persevered. Her story serves as a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is always hope for recovery and a new beginning.
