A recent study has found that a synthetic progesterone drug may have an anticancer effect when combined with conventional anti-estrogen treatments for women with breast cancer.
The PIONEER trial, led by researchers in the UK, involved 198 postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer. The participants were divided into three groups: one group received letrozole alone, while the other two groups received letrozole plus a low dose of megestrol acetate, a synthetic progesterone drug.
The results showed that adding megestrol to letrozole may have a direct anticancer effect and improve treatment adherence by alleviating hot flashes, a common side effect of anti-estrogen therapy. The study's findings were published in Nature Cancer and could have significant clinical implications for the treatment of ER+ breast cancer.
According to Dr. Esha Sachdev, a breast medical oncologist at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute, "These findings could improve treatment adherence while positively impacting tumor control." However, further studies are needed to confirm these results and explore their long-term impact on women with breast cancer.
**How Progesterone-Like Drugs Work**Progesterone-like drugs, such as megestrol acetate, mimic the effects of progesterone in the body. In ER+ breast cancer cells, estrogen receptors are present, which can stimulate cancer growth when bound to estrogen. Anti-estrogen medications, like letrozole, block estrogen receptors and reduce tumor growth.
However, reducing estrogen levels can lead to side effects similar to menopause symptoms, including hot flashes, bone loss, and joint pain. Progesterone-like drugs may help alleviate these side effects while also having a direct anticancer effect.
**What Does This Mean for Women with Breast Cancer?**The PIONEER trial's findings suggest that combining megestrol acetate with letrozole may be an effective treatment option for women with ER+ breast cancer. However, more research is needed to confirm these results and explore their long-term impact on patient outcomes.
