**A Heartwarming Story of Love and Resilience**

Meet Daniel Phan, who recently tied the knot with his girlfriend Julia in the ICU just days before undergoing lifesaving surgery. Their love story is one for the ages.

Daniel and Julia's relationship began when they were kids, after Daniel's parents hired Julia's mom to work at their nail salon. They reconnected on Facebook after college in 2014, but it wasn't until 2023 that they started dating. As Daniel shared with us, "I reached out because I saw [on Facebook] that she was at a concert and I love concerts, so I asked her if she wanted to go to a concert with me." And just like that, their journey together began.

However, life had other plans for the couple. Daniel has been living with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a genetic heart disease that affects the heart muscle's ability to pump blood. He was diagnosed at 11 years old and received a pacemaker shortly after. Despite his condition, Daniel found solace in playing guitar and drums, which became his outlet during a challenging time.

But as he entered his early 20s, Daniel began experiencing more frequent health incidents, including arrhythmias without exertion. On January 15, 2025, things took a turn for the worse when he experienced an intense arrhythmia while watching TV. He was rushed to the ER and spent a week in Gainesville Northeast Georgia.

Due to his heart failure, Daniel's medical team at Piedmont Heart in Atlanta recommended a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) as his next course of treatment. An LVAD works like a water pump, taking blood from the left ventricle and pumping it into the aorta, allowing for increased blood flow and oxygenation to vital organs.

We spoke with Sagar Damle, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon at Piedmont Heart, who explained that an LVAD is recommended when patients have heart failure that has become refractory to medical therapy. "In this situation, the heart is too weak to adequately pump blood to the entire body," Dr. Damle said. "When medications are no longer effective, LVADs, and sometimes transplant, are the next steps."

Daniel's story is a testament to the power of love and resilience in the face of adversity. We wish him and Julia all the best as they navigate this new chapter together.

**About Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)**

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetic heart disease that affects the heart muscle's ability to pump blood. It can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and tiredness, especially during physical activity. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with HCM, it's essential to work closely with your healthcare team to manage symptoms and prevent complications.

**Learn more about LVADs**

A Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) is a mechanical device that helps the heart pump blood. It's typically recommended for patients who have heart failure that has become refractory to medical therapy.
