**The Impact of "Forever Chemicals" on Aging**

Research has shed new light on the potential effects of "forever chemicals" on human aging, particularly among middle-aged men. A recent study found a link between exposure to certain PFAS compounds and accelerated biological aging at the cellular level.

The study's findings are concerning, given the widespread presence of these chemicals in consumer products, drinking water, and even firefighting foams. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic compounds that repel water, oil, and heat, making them durable and resistant to damage.

Previous research has associated "forever chemicals" with various health issues, including elevated cholesterol levels, childhood obesity, and an increased risk of certain cancers. This new study suggests that PFAS exposure may also contribute to signs of accelerated epigenetic aging.

Epigenetic aging estimates biological age at a cellular level based on chemical markers found on DNA. The researchers found that specific PFAS compounds affected individuals differently, with the association being most pronounced among middle-aged men.

"While the study does not prove causation, it suggests that PFAS exposure may be linked to molecular changes related to aging and long-term health risk," said Xiangwei Li, PhD, professor of epidemiology at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

The study examined two additional PFAS compounds: perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSA). The findings are consistent with prior research in this area, which has shown that certain PFAS compounds can accelerate epigenetic clocks in males.

Protecting Your Health from "Forever Chemicals"

While the study's results are concerning, there are steps you can take to minimize your exposure to PFAS chemicals. By choosing products that are free from these substances and taking care to avoid contaminated drinking water, you can reduce your risk of adverse health effects.
